Easter Eggs & Dental Health Tips

With Easter just around the corner we thought a few dental health tips for looking after our teeth after those sweet treats would be a helpful refresher for us all.

We obviously know those treats are inevitable at this time of year but there are a few simple things we can do to minimise the impact it can have on our oral health.

  1. Try to have your treats after a meal rather than a stand-alone snack, this helps reduce the amount of sugar attacks your teeth go through.
  2. Brush your teeth around 30 minutes after eating. Eating and drinking foods containing sugar and acids naturally weakens the enamel on your teeth. Brushing straight afterwards can cause tiny particles of enamel to be brushed away. It is best not to brush your teeth until at least one hour after eating. It is especially important to brush before bed. This is because the flow of saliva, which is the mouth’s own, cleaning system, slows down during the night and this leaves the mouth more at risk from decay.
  3. If you are unable to brush your teeth after your treat then you can use mouthwash instead or chewing sugar free gum – this helps produce saliva to help get rid of unwanted bacteria!
  4. Try using a straw when drinking fizzy or sugary drinks, or at least do not sip them over a long period of time. Paper straws instead of plastic straws are great in helping the environment too!

We hope you all have a fantastic Easter, enjoy those sugary treats in moderation and look after your teeth- they wont look after themselves!
