24 Jul Leanne’s Top Tips For A Healthier Smile
Our dental nurse, Leanne, gives us her top tips for a healthier smile.
As obvious as it may sound, one of the best tips we can offer is to brush twice a day for 2 minutes each time using a fluoride toothpaste. Try using a timer as it’s actually longer than you may think. 4 minutes out of the 1440 in a day isn’t really too much to ask to benefit your teeth and general oral health.
Many people find they brush too aggressively which can cause irreversible damage to the gums. We recommend using an electric toothbrush with a built in pressure sensor to prevent this. The Oral B Pro 2000 is one we recommend alongside the small round brush heads.
- Children under three years old should brush twice daily, with a smear of toothpaste containing no less than 1000ppm fluoride.
- Children between three and six years old should brush at least twice daily with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste containing more than 1000ppm fluoride.
- Adults should brush at least twice daily with a toothpaste containing 1350-1500ppm fluoride.
Don’t forget between your teeth! There are many ways to clean interdentally so hopefully you can find one that suits you.Ask your dentist/hygiene therapist about floss, flossettes and tepe brushes next time you visit.
We recommend changing your toothbrush or toothbrush head every 3-4 months to ensure effective cleaning every time.
Try and limit the intake of sugar you consume. Carbonated drinks contain acid along with lots of sugar which can harm your teeth (Even sugar free diet versions of drinks contain acid so beware).
Make you sure you attend regular checkups with us to maintain your oral health and ensure everything is as it should be. Ask your dentist how frequent they recommend you have an examination and be sure to return for any treatment appointments you may require.
If you would like to book a routine examination, please call the practice on 01623 629359.
