ROOT CANAL TREATMENTS

At Thackeray Dental Care in Mansfield we do everything we can to save teeth. We understand that even though we can replace missing teeth with fantastic substitutes, your own tooth is still a better option, in most cases.

When a tooth is badly broken down or decay deep into the centre of the tooth, a root canal treatment will be necessary to retain the tooth. If a tooth is abscessed too this will also need root treatment.

Root canal treatment or endodontics involves removing the interior of a tooth where the nerve and blood supply sit. In the past this has been a varied treatment with uncertain outcomes, now, however, we are able to predict outcomes for this treatment with more accuracy. This is because we have access to the latest instrumentation and techniques to cleanse out the canal structure.

An additional improvement is our access to a CBCT scanner. This can deliver a 3D image of the canal structure in a tooth and confirm if it is possible to successfully root treat. Failures with this treatment sometimes happen because of fractures within the root structure that conventional x-rays do not pick up. A 3D image can spot these problems and help us with our treatment planning.

Once the interior of the tooth has been cleansed and shaped it is sealed and then restored with a crown, inlay or onlay.
